BSI PROTEOMICS Verifying an innovative solution to solving membrane protein structures Gaithersburg, MD National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Description: BSI is a drug enabling technology company. The new science of structure based drug design deals with designing drugs that interact wth the erratic proteins that are in the disease pathway. The company's platform of technologies deals with determining the molecular structure of these target proteins and supporting the drug design process by determining how effectively the drug candidate interacts molecularly as a blocker or inhibitor. The company's technology is based on crystalizing the protein to be studied and then with powerful X-ray beams (at a synchrotron) collecting X-ray data which permits solving the moecular structure.

Promogen, Inc. Production of Neuroblastoma Cancer-Specific Gene Promoter/Enhancer Cassettes Gaithersburg University of Maryland, Baltimore
Description: Promogen is involved in developing innovative gene expression technologies. Promogen plans to produce a line of synthetic promoters capable of targeting gene expression to specific cell types with unprecedented levels of precision. It will adapt the technology for the development of cancer gene therapy drugs targeting neuroblastoma and various other cancer types. Promogen is also developing enhanced constitutive promoters to be used in recombinant gene therapeutics production systems for a dramatic reduction in manufacturing costs. The company has obtained a patent on its platform technology and it expects to generate revenue via licensing to companies interested in this technology.

INTELLITECH MICROSYSTEMS, INC. Development of UAVs in precision agriculture. Bowie Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC)
Description: IntelliTech Microsystems, Inc. is one of Maryland's leading manufacturers of Robotic Systems including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). IntelliTech has defined a UAV solution for the emerging technology of Precision Agriculture (PA). Aerial photos of farmer's fields are used to detect crop water stress, nutrient deficiency, and insect and disease infestations. These data are used to determine the precise amount of water, fertilizer and insecticide to be applied to the field, minimizing waste and mitigating runoff damage to ecologically sensitive environments such as the Chesapeake Bay. Maryland farmers will benefit by millions of dollars in cost savings as well as vastly improving their yields.
